The Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya on Monday announced the vacancy for the Lilongwe City South East Constituency following the Supreme Court of Appeal ruling that a rerun be held.
The seat was under Bentry Namasasu of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) but Ulemu Msungama of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) challenged him in court arguing that he rigged the election.
Making his announcement in Parliament yesterday, Msowoya said he has received communication from court that Namasasu is no longer an MP and the seat is now vacant.
Msowoya also communicated the house that Independent Member of Parliament for Karonga Central Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo has joined the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD).
The speaker said Mwenefumbo has since asked his office to relocate him to opposition benches in the house.
