The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has finally fired chief elections officer Willie Kalonga over allegation of financial abuse at the electoral body.
Kalonga was suspended together with deputy chief elections officer (operations) Harris Potani, director of administration and human resources George Khaki, director of finance Khumbo Phiri, procurement manager Edington Chilapondwa, procurement officer Chimwemwe Kamala and assistant procurement officer Sydney Ndembe.
The seven officers were suspended to pave way for smooth investigation to the alleged plunder of public funds at the electoral body.
But now reports indicate that Kalonga has since been fired together with director of administration and human resources George Khaki.
Kalonga confirmed of the development in an interview with Nation Newspaper.
“Yes, it is true I received the letter two weeks ago, but I have appealed [against the decision]. The reasons cited in the letter are not convincing,” said Kalonga.
Kalonga said he was not heard on the matter contrary to rules of natural justice.
He also argues that he was “wrongly charged” using Section 10 of the Public Finance Management Act.
