A 25 year old man identified as Kassim Ibrahim on Thursday hanged himself to death in Nkhatabay District, police have confirmed.
Nkhatabay Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Ignatius Esau told the Malawi News Agency the deceased was suffering from a mental ailment.
“On Thursday, 18th of May, 2017, Kassim Ibrahim aged 25 years, hanged himself to the ceiling of his house. The incident occurred in the morning hours at around 7 O’clock. Around 6 O’clock he is said to have gone to the market, and then came back straight into the house and hanged himself.
No foul play was detected at the scene of the incident and the victim is said to have a history of mental illness,” explained the police PRO, adding it was the children playing by his house that discovered him.
“The deceased was found by young children who were playing outside his house who saw him through a window. His sister, Stella Phiri, then reported the incident to Police,” he said.
According to Esau, postmortem conducted at Nkhatabay District Hospital revealed that Ibrahim’s death was due to strangulation.
Kassim Ibrahim hailed from Ng’ombo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi District.
