The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has banned Mount Meru Petroleum Limited from importing fuel into Malawi due to failure by the company to remit levies.

This has been disclosed in a letter addressed to the company dated May 4 2017 signed by MERA Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr Chioko seen by faceofamalawi reporter.

According to the letter, the decision to ban Mount Meru from importing fuel was made at MERA’s 35th extraordinary meeting held on March 24 2017.

“Kindly be informed that the board for Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority at its 35th extraordinary meeting held on 24th March 2017 resolved that the importation of licence granted to Mount MERU Petroleum Company Limited be suspended for failure to remit levies as required by law.

“Following the suspension of the importation licence, Mount MERU is no longer allowed to import fuel into the country until such a time that the licence is reinstated by MERA,” reads in part the statement.

Meanwhile officials from Mount MERU are yet to respond on the matter.
