President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has ordered government to provide assistance towards the cost of funeral arrangements and medical bills of those people affected in the two accidents that happened on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, Future Tours bus travelling from Lilongwe to Blantyre overturned several times at Manjawira along the M1 Road in Ntcheu, killing ten people on the spot.

Over 40 passengers escaped with serious injuries and some were referred to Balaka District Hospital and Zomba Central Hospital.

According to Blantyre Police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala, the truck’s brakes malfunctioned in the process sweeping seven vehicles including four minibuses.

In his condolence message, President Mutharika expressed shock over the incident.

“Government undertakes to provide assistance towards the cost of funeral arrangements and hospital bills of those who are receiving medical attention in hospital following this accident,” reads the statement in part signed by Minister of Information and Communications Technology.
