Prison officers across the country have embarked on a nationwide strike in protest against alleged disparity in remunerations with their police and immigration counterparts.
Reports indicate striking staff have sealed entrance to Zomba, Mzuzu and Maula prisons, deterring police from ferrying suspects on remand at the prisons to respective courts, and also visitors from visiting their relations at the prisons.
Among other grievances, the staff are demanding government to provide them with risk allowance as they deal with convicts.
Meanwhile, authorities are yet to comment on the matter.
