A fisherman identified as Bright Mackenzie has died after drowning on Lake Malawi in Mangochi on Thursday, July 20, 2017.
Mangochi Police Deputy Spokesperson, Sgt. Amina Tepani Daudi, said in an interview the matter was reported to the police by another fisherman, Juwalo Kalembo, who went fishing during the night of July 19, at Matuwi Fishing dock.
According to Daudi, as Kalembo was pulling his fish nets from the water to harvest the fish, he was shocked to find a dead body trapped in one of his nets.
He called out his fellow fishermen who came to the scene and identified the body as being that of Mackenzie.
“The deceased was staying alone as he came to stay at that side of the lake a few years to fish and nobody knows his relatives,” said Daudi, adding: “But it is believed that he hailed from Kauphawi Village, Traditional Authority Msamala in Balaka District.”
She said postmortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital revealed that his death was due to suffocation.
The dead body is kept at Mangochi District Hospital mortuary waiting identification by relatives, according to Daudi.
The police have since appealed to the general public to notify any nearest police if the particulars of the deceased as described above belong to a familiar person.
