It is now clear that divisions in Malawi Congress Party (MCP) will soon graduate into something negative as both party vice president Richard Msowoya, and Sidik Mia are eyeing of Lazarus Chakwera’s running mate in the 2019 presidential elections.
Speaking at a rally in Mzimba on Sunday, Msowoya described himself as only potential partner to Chakwera who can manage to carry the MCP flag in the 2019 elections.
Msowoyo with backing from some big fish in party likes of Secretary general Gustavo Kaliwo, publicity secretary Jessie Kabwira, Mzimba South East Constituency Member of Parliament, Christopher Mnyenyembe, and Alex Major of Kasungu West and some officials have argued that him and Chakwera are only the pair who has a good vision for Malawi.
The Party’s vice president also asked his home people which he called ‘Northerners’ to support him of becoming vice president of Chakwera in 2019 elections.
“My fellow Northerners, I have total trust in our president Lazarus Chakwera to be a better candidate to lead the country. I am sure that I also qualify to be his deputy as you have observed that I have performed well in the party. Therefore, I call upon you, my fellow MCP members, to support me so that I and Chakwera continue leading the party into government come 2019 elections,” Msowoya said.
The Msowoya’s declaration came a week after Mia announcement that he is also eyeing for the position of the country’s Vice President in 2019 and expected MCP president Lazarous Chakwera to pick him as his running mate.
Mia who has just joined MCP also appealed to Muslims in the country for the support.
“I appeal to Muslims to help me in 2019 because I am vying for the post of Vice President of this country whether one likes it or not,” said Mia.
Meanwhile, some MCP veterans, including Kaliwo do not like Mia’s idea of eyeing the position of Vice President in 2019.
