As the road to the 2019 polls is getting tighter each passing day, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has equated the alliance between Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and opposition People’s Party (PP) to that of a snake and guinea fowl.

DPP Secretary General Griezeder Jeffrey said this in Chitipa on Tuesday during the official commissioning of the Chitipa Water Supply project.

Jeffrey wa Jeffrey said it is disheartening that the opposition political parties are failing to appreciate what President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is doing in the country in terms of development.

“Mr President, you have done a lot of things in Malawi, but opposition members don’t want to appreciate. I want to tell them today, I hear MCP and PP have formed an alliance, but…

“It is like the relationship of a snake and a guinea fowl. You know the guinea fowl left for America to look for food, but the snake at home is busy preying on the little ones. They have taken [Sidik] Mia and [Mzuzu City] mayor [William Mkandawire] and yet they say they are in an alliance. So, by the time the guinea fowl returns, all the children will have been eaten by the snake,” she said.

Reacting to the claims, MCP Deputy Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka laughed off the accusation.

Meanwhile social commentators have asked the ruling DPP to stop attacking the opposition, saying the attack shows the party is not comfortable with MCP.
