Opposition People’s Party (PP) governor for the North Maquenda Chunga who is also member of Parliament for Mzimba South has denied claims by Secretary General for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Gridezer Jeffrey that he has joined the party.

Jeffrey wa Jeffrey last week announced at President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s rally that Chunga has joined the party alongside with the whole committee of PP in the north.

After the announcement, Jeffrey asked Chunga to shake hands with Mutharika.

But speaking in an interview with the press, Chunga denied joining DPP and accused DPP Secretary General of lying.

“I was just surprised that the DPP secretary general mentioned my name. I did indeed stand up and went to meet the president because it would have been embarrassing not to go there, not to meet the President when your name has been mentioned.

“Actually, when my name was mentioned, I was hesitant to go and meet him but I could see that the Head of State was waiting to shake my hand so I thought if I failed to go, I would embarrass him,” said Chunga.

Effort to talk to DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila on the matter proved futile.
