Rwandan government has come out in open to offer refuge to as many as 30, 000 African migrants suffering abuse, torture and rape in Libya.

Rwanda`s foreign minister Louise Mushikiwabo said his country is currently under discussions to see how it can help in welcoming the migrants held captive in Libya.

“It has just been decided so numbers and means are still under discussion but Rwanda estimates the number to be welcomed around 30,000,” she said.

She added that the figure has not been confirmed as it is still estimation.

A footage showing the migrants being auctioned at “slave market” in Libya surfaced last week on internet causing the AU commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat to call upon African countries for help.

These migrants are going through these struggles as they cross lawless Libya in pursuit of a new life in Europe.

The voyage from Libya across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy – often on flimsy boats run by people smugglers is the main route to Europe for migrants from Africa, with more than 95,000 people having set sail this year, and 180,000 in 2016.

Before they even embark on the perilous sea leg of their voyage, many migrants end up detained in Libya, and face abuse, extortion, and forced labor at the hands of armed groups, criminal gangs and smugglers, aid agencies say.

These are people who are escaping war, persecution, poverty and yet in Libya they encounter another hell.
