Government has disowned a facebook account bearing the name of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika praising Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of Enlighten Christian Gathering (ECG) Church, saying the facebook account is fake.

Last week the social media was awash with congratulatory message directed to Prophet Bushiri purportedly written by President Mutharika through a facebook account ‘His Excellency The Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’.

In the message, Mutharika hailed Bushiri for launching his five star hotel in South Africa.

“I join hands to congratulate Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of Enlightened Christian Gathering church (ECG) for launching his five star hotel in South Africa on Tuesday night.

“I therefore ask Prophet Bushiri, who is the president of Shepherd Bushiri Investments (SBI) to also consider investing more in his home country, Malawi. It is not worthy to invest outside your country, it’s more worthy to start from your country. So, as the president of Malawi, my door is open to have dialogue with this powerful man of God, Prophet Bushiri for his investments here in Malawi,” reads the statement in part.

Added the statement: “Time has come for Malawi to start mobilising it’s own people for a common good of lifting the country’s economy.”
But Presidential Press Officer Mgeme Kalilani trashed the statement, describing it as fake.

“State House disassociates the President from both the letter and the Facebook page as they are both fake. The President has not authored any letter in connection with Prophet Bushiri’s business Investments.

“President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika does not have a Facebook page under the name ‘His Excellency The Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’ as alleged. The correct Facebook account for the President is ‘Arthur Peter Mutharika/Politician,” wrote Kalilani.

He added: “State House calls upon all Malawians to exercise their freedom of expression and make use of online technology with restraint and responsibility.

“State House in conjunction with the relevant authorities is investigating the matter and the law will take its course once the perpetrators behind such fabrications are found.”
