The country’s well-known business mogul-cum politician Mohammed Sidik Mia is reported to challenge to sponsor the impending Malawi congress party {MCP} convention alone slated for March this year.
Inside sources within the party who opted for anonymity said in an exclusive interview that Mia challenged to sponsor the convention on the condition that he is elected the vice president or a presidential electoral running mate during the convention.
During the people’s party {PP} convention, Mia also pumped in a lot of money for the convention on condition that he elected on his position.
However, former president Joyce Banda opted for Sosten Gwengwe as a presidential running mate, a development that frustrated Mia to leave the party.
“Indeed, we can confirm that Mia has come with confusion in the party. His money has divided us, some of us are following him because of his influence with money while others are not,” said one of the sources.
The source said Mia’s intention is not to build the party but to have a high position I the party.
“It’s likely that Mr. Mia will dump the party if not elected as a vice president like in the past. This will further confuse the party on its preparation for the election,” said the source, adding that people have a choice to elect leaders not only on condition of being given money.
