Muslims in the country have been urged to desist from the corrupt practices that have rocked that country.

Former secretary to treasury Dr Ronald Mangani told the private debate in Blantyre recently that Muslims have been at the forefront of corrupt practices in the country.

Mangani, himself a Muslim, singled out the Muslims of Asian community as the main perpetrators of corruption in the country.

“It was a very pity for me when I was secretary to treasury to see the majority of Muslims of Asian community queuing at the door of my office for corruption. I could easily shed tears on this,” said Mangani.

Dr Mangani, who is also an associate professor at the department of economics at chancellor college, disclosed that corruption was systematic and deep rooted in the country because the practices is not condemned by the high authorities in the public sector.

“Corruption is embedded in human nature and starts from the public sector and go down to private sector and civil society. Many people in the public sector perpetrate this because they get meagre perks,” said Mangani.

The panel discussion, one of its kind in the country, was organized by the Zanzibar university Muslim graduation association {ZUMGA} with the theme ‘balancing deen {Islam} and professionalism.

Dan Kamanga, the Blantyre district ZUMGA chairman said the public discussion was aimed at networking and share different views on Islamic professionalism.
