Police in Malawi’s district of Nkhotakota which is known for growing chamba have launched an investigation that can lead to arrest of suspects who abandoned 22 bags of Chamba as they were in process of escaping arrest.
The district’s police deputy spokesperson Paul Mwalimwe said the suspects abandoned a vehicle with registration number MZ 7780 which had carried the bags on Thursday.
Reports say, police had received a tip about some men who were traveling with Indian hemp.
Following that, the officers on the night of March 30 set up a roadblock at Nkhotakota Boma in effort to apprehend the culprits.
As the suspect’s vehicle was approaching the roadblock, the driver noticed it then made a right turn to escape the officers.
“Police immediately started chasing after the vehicle and when the suspects realised that the police vehicle was fast approaching, they abandoned their vehicle and ran into the bush,” mwalimwe explained.
The officers found the 22 bags containing the illicit drug in the vehicle, Toyota Noah.
They have since not been arrested but police investigation is ongoing.
