A 20-year-old woman in Mchinji has died after she slipped into a toilet while trying to answer the call of nature, police say.

Mchinji police spokesperson Inspector Kaitano Lubrino has identified the deceased as Fatsani Kampala who met the fate on Monday 9th April 2018.

According to Lubrino, the husband to the deceased Moses Kantambe told the police that around 1800hrs, the deceased went to a pit latrine toilet outside their house to help herself.

“Whilst there, It is believed that due to the weakening and slippery surface, the woman lost balance and skidded into the pit latrine. She cried for help and people that surround her home came for her rescue”, Lubrino explained.

A crowd razed down the toilet and managed to retrieve her but it was after she had breathed her last.

Police together with health practitioners at Mchinji District Hospital were called to the scene and took the body to the said hospital where a postmortem revealed she had died due to suffocation.

Police have urged the general public to make sure their toilets are strong and well-constructed to avoid such incidents.
