A prisoner warder at Mulanje Prison has been arrested for stealing a water pump worth K1.5 million.
Mulanje Police Station Public Relations Officer Grasham Ngwira has identified the suspect as Geoffrey Kumbukani Saiwa warder number 3385.
According to Ngwira, the water pump which was donated by Saint Egidio of the Roman Catholic Church was discovered stolen on April 3 and the matter was reported at Mulanje Police Station.
Officers from the said police station visited the scene and launched an investigation afterwards.
“On April 18 a well-wisher tipped police that one of the prison waders at the institution is the one who stole the pump hence the arrest of the warder. When interrogated, he revealed to have stolen the item with the aim of selling it,” Said Ngwira.
Ngwira added that police managed to recover the one million five hundred kwacha pump and charged the suspect with theft contrary to section 278 of the penal code.
Saiwa hails from Balakasi village in the area of traditional authority Chikowi in Zomba.
