Police in Mzuzu fired teargas to disperse protestors who turned violent after delivering the 10-point petition to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika through Mzuzu City Council offices.
The protestors who turned up in large numbers started removing flags of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and tearing billboards with President Peter Mutharika’s face angering the police officers assigned to control the crowds.
The development saw police officers firing teargas at protestors who retaliated by pelting stones at them.
Peace returned in the evergreen city half an hour later and the police managed to arrest five people suspected to be behind the fracas.
Speaking in an interview with faceofmalawi reporter, one of the protestors who opted for anonymity said Malawians are not happy with Mutharika’s leadership hence the chaos.
Meanwhile Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have given President Mutharika 90 days to respond to the petition.
