A Malawi police officer has allegedly committed suicide in Machinga by drinking sulfuric acid.

Sergeant Misozi Mangisa of Kawinga Police Unit identified the deceased as Constable Suzgo Thaulo who was an officer at Nanyumbu Police Unit.

According to Sergeant Mangisa, the incident happened on Wednesday around 22: hrs at Nanyumbu within Ntaja area.

“In the morning hours of Wednesday, the deceased went to Nanyumbu primary school where he was offering security at a cluster centre during standard 8 Maneb Examinations for 2018. He was only present during the first paper in the morning hours and disappeared to unknown destination later on, said Mangisa.

It is reported that around 22hrs on the same day, he returned and he gave an appearance as he was drunk. When he was asked, he answered that he had consumed Sulfuric acid.

He was taken to Nanyumbu Health Centre but due to his state, he was referred to Machinga District Hospital at Liwonde.

Reports say the deceased repeatedly said to Sergeant Mangisa while in hospital that village headman Chitseko had to forgive hm until his death on 17th May.

Further reports say the deceased had been acting strange days before his death and he had once said he was seeing people attacking him with an aim to take away his life.

Meanwhile, a postmortem revealing the cause of his death is yet to be done at Machinga district hospital.
