The infighting in the ruling Democratic Progress Party (DPP) is far from over as one faction supporting the country vice President Saulos Chilima has described the much awaited convention scheduled for next month as illegal.
On Wednesday DPP through its Secretary General Grezeldar Jeffrey released a statement announcing that the party will hold the convention in June.
One thing that surprised many people was that the statement did not disclose the exact date when the party will hold its convention.
“I Honorable Grezeldar Jeffrey, MP, Secretary General of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), announce that the DPP will hold its convention in June, 2018.
“The date of the convention will be announced by the Chairperson of the Convention in due course,” reads in part the statement.
When contacted for comment Member of Parliament for Mulanje South Bon Kalindo who is one of the people advocating for Chilima described the convention as illegal.
In his speech, Kalindo said Jeffrey wa Jeffrey has no powers to call for convention.
“What I know is that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is supposed to call for National Governing Council (NGC) meeting where members will sit down and come up with the date for convention and not one person who was just hand-picked,” said Kalindo.
Kalindo said his camp will hold a press briefing today to map the way forward.
Meanwhile it is not known as to whether the Chilima’s camp will allowed to part in the said convention.
