Former Malawi’s first lady Callista Mutharika has said that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika who is also her brother in-law lacks leadership.
Callista said this during a media briefing organized by supporters of the country’s vice President Saulos Chilima at Golden Peacock in the capital Lilongwe on Thursday.
In her speech, Callista said President has failed Malawians and its time for him to park and leave the leadership in the hands of Chilima.
“Peter Mutharika is indeed my brother-in-law but right now I am not looking at him as a brother-in-law but, I am looking at how he has failed Malawians. I can tell you that I was appointed one of his advisors, but since my appointment, I have only met him once. In that meeting, we were with him for only 30 minutes and came out saying to myself that I have never seen poor chairmanship like the one I witnessed,” said Callista.
Callista went further by apologizing to Malawians over the ascendancy of Mutharika to the high office, saying it was an error.
On her part, Member of Parliament for Mulanje West Constituency Patricia Kaliati who also chaired the briefing said that without Chilima the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) should forget of emerging victorious in the forthcoming 2019 polls.
“Our position for nominating Chilima doesn’t mean we’re against Mutharika but we think he is old and that is making it difficult for him to make right decisions. He will remain our go-to person. “Akuluakulu ndi m’dambo mozimira moto”.
“If he does that, he will be our Mandela. If DPP does not consider Chilima as DPP presidential candidate, take it or leave it, DPP will not win elections in 2019,” said Kaliati.
Meanwhile President Mutharika has maintained his stand that he will contest in the forthcoming polls.
