Police in Kasungu are keeping in custody a 30-year-old man for assaulting his wife and in the process, disrupting lessons at Kavunguti Primary School where his wife teaches.
Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer, Edna Mzingwitsa identified the suspect as Jabesi Nyirenda.
It is said that on that day, Nyirenda went to Kamvunguti Primary School where his wife, Bertha Mwale, teaches and started confronting her about a phone number he found in her phone gadget which he got suspicious of.
Mzingwitsa said the wife tried to explain about the phone number but Nyirenda was not ready to understand and started beating her.
“In the course, some pupils started crying whilst others started pelting stones at him in order to defend their teacher. Due to the commotion, other teachers and learners rushed to the scene and tried to calm the situation but to no avail,” said Mzingwitsa.
The Police PRO added that one of the teachers identified as Nemoni Zimba, 42, was also assaulted by Nyirenda in the process.
The Head Teacher informed the police about the incident who rushed to the scene and arrested the accused Nyirenda.
The wife to the suspect, who was bleeding, and the other assaulted teacher were given police reports and referred to Kasungu District Hospital where they were treated as out-patients.
Nyirenda will appear before court soon to answer charges of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm contrary to Section 254 of the Penal Code and Conduct Likely to Cause Breach of Peace contrary to Section 181 of the same.
Nyirenda hails from Bwengu in Traditional Authority Jalavikuba in Mzimba District.
