Police are keeping in custody a 39-year-old driver for causing death of two people due to reckless driving in Bvumbwe.
Limbe Police Public relations officer Constable Patrick Mussa identified the suspect as Mr Andrew Tembo who hails from Kasokoneza village in the area of traditional authority Makhuwira in Chikwawa district.
According to Mussa, on June 4, the suspect was driving a vehicle with registration number BS2475 from the direction of Limbe going towards Bvumbwe with three passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at 6 miles near Nantipwiri Filling Station, the driver was overtaking a certain vehicle and in the process, he collided with the oncoming vehicle, registration number KU 2300 Nissan half tonner.The driver lost control of the vehicle and ended up hitting three male pedestrians who were walking on the far side of the road,” said Mussa.
The three pedestrians were rushed to Thyolo District Hospital after sustaining severe head injuries but unfortunately, two of them died.
The bodies were taken to the hospital’s mortuary pending identification by relatives.
The suspect is in police custody and will appear in court soon to answer a charge of Causing Death by Reckless Driving which is Contrary to Section 126 of Road Traffic Act.
