President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed shock over the death of four pupils after walls of a classroom block at Natchengwa Primary School in Zomba District collapsed following strong winds.
The accident happened on Wednesday morning at around 7am and the accident left 16 pupils seriously injured who were referred to Zomba Central Hospital for medical attention.
In statement released on Wednesday morning signed by Chief Secretary to the President, Mutharika expressed shock over the matter.
“Their Excellencies join all Malawians in expressing their deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
“The president is, therefore, assuring the bereaved and the affected families that the government will do everything possible within its means to support them during this difficult time,” read in part the statement.
The report, signed by district disaster officer Florence Harawa on behalf of the District Commissioner, further states that an assessment conducted by the District Civil Protection Committee indicates that the classroom block, which is located in T/A Ngwelero and was partly constructed through community contributions, was not fit for usage.
