Kasungu First Grade Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced 18-year-old to 9 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a 73-year-old woman.

The convict has been identified as Martin Phiri who committed the offence on May 18, 2018 at Jalang’ombe village, T/A Mwase in Kasungu.

Reports say around 16:00hrs on that day, the convict arrived at the victim’s house where he found her and her grandchildren drinking locally brewed kachaso beer.

He joined them and withdrew K500 note giving it to the victim’s grandchildren to go and get more kachasu.

When the grandchildren left, Phiri got a privilege to drag the woman into a nearby bush where he raped her.

The news surfaced and police arrested Phiri over a charge of rape of which he pleaded guilty while appearing before Kasungu First Grade Magistrate Damiano Banda.

In his mitigation, Phiri asked the court to be lenient with him stating that he was a first offender.

But prosecutor Inspector Griffin Luhanga asked the court to impose a stiff punishment on him stating that the behavior he showed was unacceptable in society looking also at his age and the victim’s age.

Concurring with the prosecutor, First Grade Magistrate Banda said Phiri’s behavior really deserve stiff punishment to maintain moral sanity in our society.

He then sentenced him to 9 years imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict comes from Jalang’ombe village , T/A Mwase in Kasungu.
