Information reaching faceofmalawi indicates that some tricksters are illegally soliciting money from unsuspecting companies and business person across the country in the name of fundraising for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) National Convention scheduled for this month.

The social media has been awash with a letter purportedly signed by State House Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson Mgene Kalirani asking companies, organisations and business person to contribute a minimum of K4 million to the convention.

“The Office of the President and Cabinet is asking for your good office to contribute for a convention which will be held in Blantyre supporting the ruling party.

“Therefore, State House is asking the kind heart of Companies, Organizations and Dowa Business operation to take part to assist the party,” read in part the letter dated June 8 2018.

Speaking in an interview with the state owned Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Mgeme Kalirani has distanced himself from the letter.

“It has come to my attention that some conmen are using my name to steal from people in the guise of collecting contributions for the forthcoming coming DPP National convention. They are thieves. Apprehend them or report them to Police. My office and I are not in anyway involved in the organisation of the DPP convention. The letter is bogus,” said Kalilani.
