United Democratic Front (UDF) has quashed rumours hovering on the social media that the party has called off the much awaited convention scheduled for August 1.
On Monday the social media was awash with reports that the party will not elect new office bearers ahead of the 2019 polls due to the fact that the current President of the party Atupele Muluzi is to be appointed President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s runningmate.
According to the rumour, the offer follows former President Dr. Joyce Banda’s announcement that she will contest as People’s Party (PP) President in the 2019 polls.
As one way of wooing voters in the Eastern region which is believed to be UDF’s bedroom Mutharika is said to have coxed Muluzi to be his runningmate.
But UDF spokesperson Ken Ndanga trashed the rumours, saying the rumours are not true.
According to Ndanga, neither President Mutharika nor DPP has approached the party for the possible alliance.
Ndanga has since asked UDF followers to ignore the rumours.
