Information reaching faceofmalawi indicates that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will go unopposed at the much awaited party convention scheduled for July 1 at Comesa Hall in the commercial capital Lilongwe.
According to information at hand, no member in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed interest to challenge Mutharika.
The main challenger for Mutharika was his vice Dr. Saulos Chilima who was being advocated by some senior party members led by former First Lady Callista Mutharika.
Callista openly rejected Mutharika’s candidature saying his brother in-law is aging and the only hope for the DPP is Chilima.
But Chilima declared that he will not challenge Mutharika at the convention, saying he don’t want to be seen as a confusionist.
Meanwhile DPP heavyweights are scheduled to tussle for various position and one of the highly contested posts is that of the Vice President.
Minister of Local Government Kondwani Nankhumwa is set to challenge former minister of Agriculture George Chaponda for the position of vice-president for the Southern Region.
While in Central Region, former PP Acting President Uladi Mussa is set to face the incumbent Vice President Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba.
