Member of Parliament for Lilongwe South Constituency Peter Chakwantha has resigned from the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) a month after the party held its national convention in the capital Lilongwe.

Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya made the announcement on Monday afternoon in the August House.

According to Msowoya, Chakwantha asked him relocate him to Independent benches from opposition MCP benches in the house.

Chakwantha was elected in 2014 on an independent ticket but joined the opposition MCP a month after the polls.

Speaking in an interview with the press MCP Spokesperson Reverend Maurice Munthali accepted Chakwantha’s decision, saying he is expressing his political rights.

According to Munthali, Chakwantha was elected as an Independent MP and is reverting back.

“It has pleased him to revert to his original position. We respect his rights and choices. As a Party, we appreciate the services he rendered while he was in our fold,” said Munthali.

Effort to talk to Chakwantha proved futile.
