Parliament on Wednesday unanimously confirmed the appointment of Rodney Jose as Inspector General of Police through secret ballot vote.

Out of 153 Legislators who took part in the vote, 96 voted for his confirmation, 55 said No, with the remaining 2 abstaining.

President Professor Mutharika appointed Jose as acting Inspector General of Police on April 1 this year replacing Lexten Kachama who is currently on leave.

His appointment irked civil society groups and Mutharika’s critics who claimed that the appointment was illegal because the law only empowers the President to appoint an Inspector General and not someone in an acting capacity.

Others argued that Jose is implicated in the gruesome murder of a Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa and should be cleared by the court first before his confirmation.
