President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has warned newly elected National Governing Council (NGC) members from using their positions to steal from the public and private sector.

Mutharika said this when closing the three day elective convention for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held at Comesa Hall in Blantyre.
In his speech, Mutharika urged all those elected to different positions to work hard.

“Now that you have been elected go to work and don’t just stay at home. I don’t want you to go and hustle contracts in the name of the party. That must stop,” said Mutharika in anger.

Turning to the forthcoming 2019 tripartite election, Mutharika said he is not vying for the post for self-enrichment as said by some quarters.

Mutharika said if he were on presidency for money, he would have been pocketing 100percent of his salary.

“You can go and ask the treasury, out of my MK1.5 million monthly salary entitlement, I take only 40percent and the rest is returned to treasury,” said Mutharika.

Meanwhile the convention has ended.
