Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has called off their much awaited national wide sit-in scheduled to start today, July 9, 2018 aimed at forcing the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to pay them their arrears.

TUM President Willie Malimba confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

According to Malimba, the strike has been suspended due to the fact that government has started processing the arrears estimated at MK1.7 billion.

“We have only suspended the strike and we will be monitoring to ensure that all teachers are paid their arrears,” said Malimba.

Last month TUM wrote Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST), Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Chief Secretary to Government to intervene on the matter or face national wide strike.
