Dr. Saulos Chilima of the UTM registered on Wednesday at Area 18 St. Thomas Anglican Church in Lilongwe while his MCP counterpart Dr. Lazarus registered on Tuesday at his home village at Kasiya in Lilongwe.
Dr. Chilima, who is also Malawi’s vice president, briefly commented on quick the process was, saying the citizenry should take advantage of this.
“The process is extremely quick, a minute or so and you are done. When they [electoral commission] demonstrated it to us in parliament, I was convinced that this is the way to go. I just encourage everyone to go and register,” he said.
He said that he is satisfied with the progress of the exercise in the second and third phases of the registration unlike with the first phase which he disputed by calling for an extension.
The registration is now open for third phase in Lilongwe city and district and is expected to conclude on 12 August, 2018.
The Malawi Electoral Commission has eased the voter registration process by combine it with the newly introduced national identity card, making the process quicker than ever before.
