President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has accused the United Transformation Movement (UTM) led by the country’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima of running the campaign based on insults aimed at tarnishing his image and that of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Mutharika said this on Thursday during a talk to the President programmed aired on State controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
The President urged UTM to go ahead in insulting him and some party officials saying he will not respond to that.
“Can you really run the whole presidential campaign based on the basis of insulting others? This is ridiculous,” said Mutharika.
Turning to the K145 million his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) received from businessman Zameer Karim, Mutharika said he never benefitted from the donation and he does not need the money.
He said part of the money was used to purchase the party’s office in Blantyre and all the papers backing the transaction are readily available.
He also insisted that the DPP will return the money to Karim and the businessman will decide what to do with it.
