Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court Tuesday denied bail to Martin Ng’ambi, 19 who is suspected to have defiled a six year- old girl at Chiputula Location in the city.
State prosecutor, Inspector Betty Msowoya, told the court Ng’ambi defiled the girl on July 24, 2018 when he found the girl playing with her friends at their compound.
“Ng’ambi found the girl playing with her friends and started chasing her until he got hold of her behind one of the houses within the compound and defiled her,” said Msowoya.
She further told the court the girl reported the matter to her step mother who took her to Mzuzu Central Hospital where it was confirmed that the girl was defiled.
The suspect, Ng’ambi then asked the court to grant him bail, saying he is young, first offender and that he has been in police custody since July 27, 2018, the day he was arrested.
The state witness, however, pleaded with the court to deny the suspect bail to prevent him from interfering with state witnesses since they come from the same location.
“I have heard the plea from both, the suspect and the state. I concur with the state, so, cannot grant bail to the suspect,” said Senior Resident Magistrate, Fatsani Chitha.
Defilement is an offence that contravenes Section 138(1) of the Penal Code.
Ng’ambi hails from Tundula Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa District.
