The report by the Ministry of Finance through Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) shows that 3,306,405 people in rural areas of the projected population of 17,931,637 will not be able to meet their annual food requirement during 2018/19 consumption period.
The country needs 138,488 metric tonnes of maize with an estimate cash value of K20 billion.
The number of affected people has risen from 1,043,000 during 2017/18 consumption period.
Unfavourable weather conditions contributed to low agriculture production.
Government is currently distributing relief food to the affected households.
