A pressure group has been formed to force Blantyre City Council (BCC) to abandon the process of a statue for divisive Indian activist Mahatma Gandhi near Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital roundabout along Masautso Chipembere Highway and Mahatma Gandhi Avenue.
The Indian government is providing funds for the project. They also plan to construct Mahatma Gandhi International Convention Centre behind Blantyre Cultural Centre opposite BCC Civic Office.
However, the Pillar of the statue on what will be Mahatma Gandhi Square has not gone down well with many people in the country who argue that the Indian freedom fighter did nothing for Malawi to get such an honour.
While in the apartheid South Africa, Gandhi is reported to have called black people “Kafir” the most demeaning word in the country.
The pressure group says the Indian was a racist figure towards africans therefore they will do anything to stop the process of the statue.
In 2016, university students in Ghana destroyed Gandhi’s statue for his racist remarks towards black people.
