The Ministry of Agriculture will on Thursday launch coupon distribution to beneficiaries of the 2018/19 Farm Input Subsidy Program (Fisp) at Mtaya community ground in Balaka.
This year’s program will target one million beneficiaries accross the country.
Government has put in place mechanisms to stop illegal selling of the subsidy input by engaging security agents an establishment of a toll free line.
Last year’s program failed to produce expected results due to drought and fall armyworms mostly in the Southern Region. Government spent approximately K40 billion in the 2017/18 financial year for the program.
Recent Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) report indicates that 3.3 million people are in need of food following poor agricultural production. Around K20 billion is need to purchase relief food.
