A driver including other four men have died and 2 others have sustained serious injuries in a road accident that occurred at Jalawe in Rumphi district.

Rumphi Police Station public relations officer, Constable Tupeliwe Kabwilo said the accident happened during the night of October 9-10, 2018.

The four deceased have been identified as Patrick Freza (driver), 39 years old from Gollio Village, T/A Machinjiri in Blantyre District, Bryson Kampango Banda,32 years from Mkazomba Village, T/A Chitseka in Lilongwe, 18 year old Shaibu Mbewe, from Thereka Village , T/A Chikulamayembe in Rumphi District and Chester Malota , 24 years from Mbango Village, T/A Mkumpha in Likoma District.

According to the PRO, a motor vehicle registration number BLK 4786/ 6528 Freight Liner Articulated Truck was coming from Karonga direction heading Mzuzu loaded with coal and five passengers on the board.

“Upon arrival on the said place as the vehicle was descending a steep slope, the driver failed to negotiate a left bend as a result ,the motor vehicle swerved to the extreme offside and landed into a gorge,” said the PRO.

Following the impact, the four stated men died on the spot due to multiple head and body injuries while the other two were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, police are appealing to drivers to be more observant with road signs and to reduce overloading beyond weight of the vehicle.

They have also appealed to all passengers never to board an overloaded motor vehicle, since these are some factors which can contribute accidents.
