Despite several interventions to curb gender based violence, a 28 – year – old Mulanje man, Kaleso Kananji is in custody for allegedly assaulting his wife.
According to the wife, on Tuesday the suspect went to a drinking joint where he came back late.
Arriving home, Kananji allegedly picked a quarrel with the wife and started assaulting her in the head.
“Consequently, the 21 – year – old wife who is dumb and pregnant, sustained multiple head injuries, a development which prompted her to seek medical help at Mulanje district hospital.
While there medical personnel advised her to report the matter to police.
Upon receipt of the matter, the police arrested the husband and formally charged him with the offence of acts occasioning actual bodily harm which contravenes section 254 of the Penal Code.” Mulanje Police Station, PRO Sergeant Gresham Ngwira narrated.
He comes from Iyapa village in the area of senior chief Nkanda in the district.
Meanwhile, police are appealing to the general public to report gender based violence to authorities for proper action.
