Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) official and businessman at Kazuni Trading Centre are in police custody for allegedly attempting to sell the electoral body generator.
Police have confirmed of the arrest and the suspects have been identified as Chifundo Macheso, the official from MEC and Martin kumwenda, a businessman at Kazuni Trading Centre.
“Facts are that the first suspect was deployed at Kazuni admarc for MEC voter registration exercise and he received two generators among other items.
“Today on 05/11/18 at around 0800hrs he took one generator and gave it to Martin Kumwenda that he should sell at Mpherembe T / centre,” reads in part the statement.
Added the statement: “As the second suspect was travelling to Mpherembe he was arrested by Mpherembe traffic police officer’s.”
After being interrogated, the suspect named Macheso as the main man behind the stolen generator.
The development comes barely days after reports were all over concerning about the biometric voter registration kit found on a train in Mozambique.
The issue raised eyebrows with many Malawians calling for the immediate resignation of MEC Chairperson Jane Ansah.
