Police in Zambia have on Wednesday arrested a mother and two other people for engaging in business of selling a one month old baby which is an offence of Human Trafficking.

Zambia police public relations officer, Esther Katongo has identified the suspect as 16-year-old Silvia Lawrence who is the biological mother of the baby, her brother Mulenga Lawrence, 26 and Abigirl Chama aged 25.

According to Katongo, police received a report from a concerned member of the public that there were people planning to sell a baby in Namwandwe area of Chief Mabumba.

“When police rushed to the scene they discovered that Silvia Lawrence had already sold her biological baby aged one month to Abgil Chama, a traditional healer with the help of her brother Mulenga Lawrence at K1,500 and had already been paid K1,100 and an ltel phone,” Katongo told the ZambianObserver.

The two suspects were apprehended later as they were planning to go to their home village.

Police investigations revealed that the duo planned to deceive their relatives that the child died whilst they were away.

The suspects are detained in police Custody yet to appear in Court.
