A 52-year-old man has on Tuesday died after drowning when he was crossing a flooding river in Nkhotakota district.

Confirming the incident, the district’s police deputy publicist Constable Paul Malimwe identified the deceased as Kaloke Sole, who hailed from Chikweza Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwadza in Salima district.

“According to the deceased relative Remusi Jubeki, on the fateful day, the deceased reportedly went to Mtosa trading center to celebrate Christmas day” Constable Malimwe said.

“Whilst there, it suddenly rained making Chiluwa River to burst its banks, On his way back, the deceased allegedly attempted to cross the overflowing River, and he was immediately swept away, prompting a search for him which led to his discovery along the River banks on 26th December this year” Malimwe narrated.

According to police report, his state forced well-wishers to rush him to Mtosa health center where the doctor pronounced him dead.

Postmortem conducted at the health center revealed that, the death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.

Meanwhile, police in the district are appealing to the general public not cross flooding Rivers, so as to avoid similar cases.
