Police at Ngabu in Chikwawa district have arrested a 36-year old man on suspicion that he defiled and infected a 14 year-old girl with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/Aids.
The suspect, Kennedy Chiseko, was arrested on Friday after committing the crime on Christmas Box last year.
Chikwawa Police Station, Public Relations Officer, Constable Foster Benjamin that Chiseko approached the girl who was washing clothes within a canal at a place known as Alumenda.
“He allegedly demanded sex from the victim to which she denied.
“The suspect produced a knife and threatened her to follow him into the nearby cane field,” said Benjamin
The police publicist said while in the field, Chiseko sexually assaulted the Standard 5 girl and left her infected.
He added that the victim kept it a secret from her parents until she disclosed everything to her teacher following her difficulties in walking.
“The girl was taken to Illovo Estate Clinic where she was diagnosed with gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV/Aids,” said the district’s police PRO
Benjamin further said police nabbed Kennedy following revelation that he was responsible for the victim’s ordeal.
Kennedy was charged with defilement, contrary to Section 138 of the Penal code, and will be shortly appearing in court.
He comes from Kalu village in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa District.
According to reports, Chikwawa Police Station registered an increase in defilement cases in the past year as compared to the same period in 2017.
