Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chinaha has asked Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo to resign from the party over his appointment as runningmate for United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi.
Muluzi unveiled Mwenefumbo, Member of Parliament for Karonga Central Constituency on Thursday during presentation of nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) ahead of the forthcoming polls.
The development attracted speculations that Mwenefumbo has dumped AFORD but in an interview he rejected the rumours.
Mwenefumbo hinted that he is still member of AFORD.
But speaking in an interview with the press, Chihana asked Mwenefumbo to resign honorably.
He said duo membership is not acceptable in the party as well as the country.
“By accepting to be Muluzi’s runningmate Mwenefumbo seems not to be part of AFORD anymore hence am asking him to honorably resign,” said Chihana.
Chihana said Mwenefumbo’s move to partner Muluzi is a personal decision not that of the party.
Meanwhile Mwenefumbo has rejected Chihana’s call.
