Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) President Overstone Kondowe has asked President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to declare Malawi as unsafe place for people living with albinism.

Kondowe’s call follows the recent abduction of 14 year old albino boy in Dedza on Tuesday night by unknown thugs.

Writing on his official facebook page, Kondowe said the association is tired with empty promises by President Mutharika on albinos.

“APAM is tired of unfruitful engagements and dialogues with government. It is time for action. APAM will reach to whatever extent as long as the plight of PWA are addressed. APAM expects that the Government of Malawi will vehemently meet its obligation under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to ensure safety for all people in Malawi, including vulnerable groups such as persons with albinism.

“APAM expects its demands to be addressed with immediate effect. Failure to meet these demands within ten (10) days from 3rd March, 2019, APAM shall call all PWA across the country to vacate their homes and villages and seek refuge in foreign countries where their safety, security, protection and socioeconomic needs will be guaranteed,” wrote Kondowe.

Effort to talk to Minister of Information and Communications Technology Henry Mussa proved futile on the matter.
