Published reports indicates that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is going ahead with plans to construct the statue of President Peter Mutharika’s departed brother, Bingu at Parliament in Lilongwe.

According to information at hand, the contractor is already on the ground sealing off the area surrounding the flag poles closer the main parliament entrance.

Statehouse press officer and president’s spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani has confirmed the development in an interview with Daily Times.

“The Bingu statue project started sometime back and His Excellency the President was fully appraised about it and he is aware of its progress,” said Kalilani.

Government Spokesperson Henry Mussa declined to state how much the project will cost and said the minister of finance is well placed to provide the specifics.

Unconfirmed reports indicates the construction will cost about MK120 million.

Bingu wa Mutharika died of Cardiac arrest in 2012 while serving as President of the Republic of Malawi.

His death led to the ascension of Joyce Banda to the high Office.
