William Chandler, the former South African pilot who was flying with a fake licence for 20 years has been arrested.
For over two decades, Chandler duped South African Airways (SAA) by flying without a valid pilot’s licence and was forced to step down in 2019.
According to News24, Chandler appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 10, however, the case was postponed to May, 15 2019. Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo confirmed the unlicenced pilot was taken into custody on grounds of fraud.
It is also understood the former pilot was released on KSh 35,000 bail. “We are aware the pilot concerned was taken into police custody earlier today in relation to a criminal case against him,” SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said.
TUKO.co.ke earlier reported Chandler was forced to step down after the SAA discovered the pilot had been operating for 20 years with a forged licence.
The discovery was made after an incident over Swiss air space had caused an investigation into the matter. The incident reportedly took place on a flight from OR Tambo International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany, in November 2018.
