Former President Dr. Joyce Banda has come out of her cocoon to comment on the failed alliance between opposition People’s Party (PP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) of Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, saying the alliance crumbed before the signing of Memorandum of understanding.
Banda said this in the capital Lilongwe during a joint media briefing between PP and the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
She said the party received offers from UTM, MCP and other parties to work with them but majority of the party’s NEC opted for UTM but she and few others opted for MCP.
“Honestly speaking I did not endorse UTM President Dr. Saulos Chilima as the rightful candidate in the forthcoming polls. What I know is that while we were trying to draw the MOU its when things started falling apart.
“They were the same majority NEC members who asked me to leave UTM and support MCP,” said Banda while attracting ululations from supporters from both side.
Turning to the endorsement of Chakwera, Banda said her decision is for the betterment of the Malawians.
She said the People’s Party (PP) will do everything possible to make sure that Chakwera wins the forthcoming May 21 tripartite election.
Meanwhile the two parties are yet to agree on the mutual benefits.
