Malawi is one of the countries in Africa that imports different products from other countries within Africa even other continents. Malawi imports its fuel from nearby countries such as Mozambique and Tanzania. This simply shows that if anything bad affects these countries it may end result affect Malawians too.
Malawians have been worried since one of the routes where Malawians are mostly use when they import its fuel, Beira route has been affected with Cyclone Idai. The Cyclone Idai affects fuel import in Malawi because they cease the percentage of fuel in Malawi.
Even though Malawians have been worried and think that the damaged route may lead to unavailability of fuel, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) assure the general public that the country continues to have sufficient internal fuel stocks and has in place strategies to ensure security of fuel supply.
“Malawi imports its fuel from Beira and Nacala ports in Mozambique and Dar-es-Salaam port in Tanzania. Out of these supply routes, it is only the Beira route that has been affected with Cyclone Idai. Malawi has, therefore, increased import volumes through Nacala and Dar-es-Salaam and has also activated the Harare route to ensure continued seamless supply of fuel in Malawi,” read part of the statement.
MERA has promise to continue to update the public of the fuel supply situation in the country.
